[edit] What this flag is and isn't

Some background information may be useful to readers, since the name of this image "Flag of Ireland rugby" might otherwise be misleading. Wikipedia discussions mentioned in the edit history of this page are archived here and here.

Lots of articles in Wikpedia relating to international sports, including rugby,use national flags to represent the national teams. However, the w:en:Flag of Ireland is considered inappropriate for the Irish rugby team since the team includes players from w:en:Northern Ireland as well as w:en:Republic of Ireland.

The w:en:Irish Rugby Football Union does have its own flag (see e.g. here), but that flag contains a copyrighted logo and so cannot':

be put in Wikimedia commons
be used in Wikipedia templates

So, the image that is used on Wikipedia instead of a flag to represent Ireland in these contexts is a generic shamrock. This is not a real flag, and it is not used by the IRFU. It is just a Wikipedia-specific symbol. This image does not belong in Category:Flags of Ireland since it is not a real flag. Jnestorius (talk) 15:49, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
